Scripture Text: Isaiah 9:1-7
Introduction
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is
given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called
Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The
everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
This
is a prophecy of the coming of the Messiah and it was given over 700 hundred
years before His birth. It tells us that the Child that was to be born and the
Son that was to be given is not just an ordinary man. According to Isaiah He
would be called: Wonderful, Counsellor, The
Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, and The Prince of Peace.
Over
the next four weeks we will look at each of these names in detail. But today we
will look at Jesus Christ as our Wonderful Counsellor.
Next
week I will be turning 57. In my life I have met many people whom I thought are
wonderful people and I am sure you have too. But as you know, sometimes the
people that we thought to be wonderful turned out not to be so wonderful after
all. Ultimately that is true of every one of us, but not true of the Lord Jesus
Christ. He is One whom the more you get to know the more wonderful He becomes to us.
Wonderful
Today,
we throw around words like "great", "super",
"incredible", and "awesome", too easily. We use these
words in trivial way. Another word that we throw around is the word "wonderful". It
has become rather devalued in our day. The word "wonderful" is full of
meaning specially when it is used in relation to God and Jesus Christ.
The
Hebrew word used in our text is "pele". It comes from the root word for miracle
or wonder. In our King James Bible, it is translated wonders and wonderful and marvellous.
Exodus 15:11 Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods?
who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing (working) wonders?
Psalm 78:12 Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of
Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
The
word used here refers to the wonderful miracles God did in delivering His
people out of Egypt. Think of the wonder of the miracle of crossing the Red
Sea.
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:
and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful,
Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father,
The Prince of Peace.
The
word "Wonderful" in the dictionary means to be struck with surprise or
astonishment or awe or amazement. Jesus Christ's name is wonderful - full of
wonder. Jesus Christ is wonder. Jesus is miracle. Jesus is astonishment. Jesus
Christ is a unique person. He is beyond our imagination. He is beyond our
capability of grasping. He is Wonderful with a capital W.
Today,
let us consider how wonderful Jesus Christ is? My prayer is, as we
consider and contemplate on how wonderful Jesus Christ is we would be filled
with awe, admiration, love and adoration.
All
of us have names we were given at birth. Many of our names have meaning. But
just because a person's name means something does not mean that person
lives up to their name. This is not so with Jesus. His Name is Wonderful
because He is truly wonderful! Jesus Christ is wonderful in His character, in
His care and in His counsel.
I - Wonderful in His
Character
Think
about His moral purity
We
are so used to the sin and moral failure that we see all around us. It can be
disheartening and discouraging. What is more discouraging is not the moral
failures of those around us but our own. We are infected with sin and
selfishness. But Jesus Christ was not and is not. He was the only person to
ever lived who never sinned.
1 Peter 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ
also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
He
committed no sin, neither was deceit found in His mouth.
Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be
touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like
as we are, yet without sin.
Jesus
Christ as our High Priest understands our weaknesses, for He faced all of the same
temptations we do, yet He did not sin.
1 John 3:5 And ye know
that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
Jesus Christ came in
order to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin.
He
is wonderful in His sinlessness and moral glory! He
not only always does the right thing but He thinks the right things. He not
only thinks the right things but He feels the right things. His heart towards
His own is always good and kind.
Think about His immutability
Everything
around us in this world changes. Everything in the universe is subject to
change. There is nothing in the universe that is fixed. There is nothing that
is stable and secure.
Governments
change. Societies change. People change. Moral values change. Think of how our society's morality
has changed. The things we used to call sin are no longer considered sin.
Imagine if you were born in 1959 and you were transported via time machine into
2016. I guarantee you, you will have massive culture shock. Because today, we
call evil good and good evil. In our society, we punish those who follow
righteousness and reward those who follow evil. We have lost our common sense.
Everything
in the world is subject to change. But there is One Who never changes - the
Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
II - Wonderful in His
Care
He
cared for you when you were a baby. He cared for you when you were in your
sins. He cares for you now and He will care for you forever because He never changes.
Think about how He saved you
He
is the gracious Saviour. I continue to be amazed
that He loves me and cares for me. When I think of all the terrible sins that I
committed I cannot understand His mercy and love towards me. If another person
hurt me the way I have hurt the Living God I would have nothing to do with
them. But after all the sins I have committed against Him, He still loves me
and saved me from my sins.
Think about how He shepherds you
He
is the Great Shepherd. He is called the Great Shepherd because a shepherd cares
for his sheep. He protects, provides and guides. No one cares for you like
Jesus does. He is looking out for your welfare more so than any other person
does, would, or even could. He is wonderful in His care. He is the Great and
Good Shepherd.
Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2: He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3: He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me
in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4: Yea, though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear
no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5: Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine
enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
III - Wonderful in His
Counsel
The
human race was ruined by a counselor, who gave the worst advice to Eve.
Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil
than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the
woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2: And
the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the
garden: 3: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden,
God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4: And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5: For God
doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and
ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Man
has fallen because of a wicked counselor but it can be and will be restored by
a Counsellor - the Lord Jesus Christ! We all
need Jesus Christ as our Counsellor.
During
Isaiah days there were many who thought themselves to be wise but they were
actually very foolish.
Isaiah 5:21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes,
and prudent in their own sight!
That
is the same problem we face today. There are many today who are convinced
that they are wise that they have become fools.
Proverbs 26:12 Seest thou a
man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
There
are two kinds of fools: there are fools out of ignorance and there are fools
out of conceit. There is more hope for a fool than for him who thinks he is
wise in his own eyes. Do not make that same mistake. There is no counsel if you
refuse to go to Him. Humble yourself and go to Jesus and to His Word for counsel,
for guidance and for wisdom.
Jesus Christ is the wisdom of God.
1 Corinthians 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews
a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
24: But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of
God, and the wisdom of God.
1 Corinthians 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of
God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and
redemption:
All
wisdom is found in Him. Oh yes, we are fools by nature how many mistakes we
make but if we go to Him, He will guide us and help us and make us wise.
Jesus
Christ is not just another counsellor, He is the
Wonderful Counsellor! He is wonderfully
qualified for this job. He had the age and experience. He has the
knowledge. He is always available. He always gives perfect advice. His
motives are always pure. He is truly the Wonderful Counsellor.
Psalm 16:7 I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel:
my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. 8: I have set the LORD
always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9: Therefore my heart is glad, and my
glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
You
and I are always on solid ground when we listen to the wisdom and counsel of
God. He is not a distant deity. We need His counsel, because we do not know it all. It is only by going to the
Wonderful Counsellor Jesus that we have any hope at
all. Yet how few will go to Him.
Closing Thoughts
Jesus
Christ is a Wonderful Counsellor. Do you see Him
as Wonderful and Counsellor? If you have not, seek
Jesus Christ, obey His counsel, and you will not regret that you ever listened
to His voice, and heard it, and lived.
Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour
and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29: Take my yoke upon you, and
learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your
souls. 30: For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Christians
are you seeking His counsel daily? Do you have a big decision to make? Oh,
listen to your Counsellor. Call unto Him and He will
show you great and mighty things you know not of. He is a Wonderful Counsellor!
AMEN!
